Do free QR codes expire? Check the code and its destination separately

Written and checked by Rakuruno · Updated September 4, 2026

A static QR code made with Rakuruno has no expiry date. It encodes the supplied content directly rather than sending readers through a Rakuruno redirect service. A URL stored in the code is a different matter: if that page is removed or changed, the code may no longer lead to the content you intended.

Check the content before saving the image

Choose URL in Safe QR Code Generator and enter:

https://rakuruno.site/

Check the complete address, including the final slash, under “Content stored in this QR code”. That address is encoded without an expiry field or an intermediate Rakuruno URL. The tool does not silently add a protocol: omitting https:// produces a warning while preserving what you entered.

A saved image cannot be updated remotely

The content of a saved PNG or SVG does not change when you enter a different URL later. Generate a new code and replace the distributed or printed image. You can instead update a destination page you control, but maintaining that page remains a separate responsibility.

Scan the actual print size with another device

  1. Save a PNG or SVG using the initial dark-on-light colors and a sufficient quiet margin.
  2. Test the intended print size, not only the large preview on screen, with another device.
  3. Before opening the link, inspect the scanner’s displayed domain and path. Confirm the destination contains what you expect.

SVG scales well for print; PNG is convenient when you need a conventional image. Dense content, tiny printing, cropped margins and inverted colors can reduce readability. The readability notices describe these conditions, not a guaranteed scan success rate.

A Wi-Fi QR image contains credentials

The Wi-Fi password is initially masked in the confirmation area and is not saved to localStorage. The generated QR image still encodes the connection information. Anyone who receives the image can read that information, so decide who should have access before displaying it publicly. Non-password settings such as the SSID and selected format remain subject to 30-day autosave.
