About this tool
Estimate reading time from Latin-script words and Japanese characters. Mixed-language text is counted without collapsing a meaningful passage to zero minutes.
Actual time varies with complexity, layout, and reader familiarity, so the result is an estimate.
At the default speed, 450 words take about two minutes
The English page starts at 225 words per minute. A 450-word passage therefore has an estimated reading time of two minutes. Changing the speed to 150 words per minute makes the same passage three minutes.
- This is a text-length estimate. It does not account for diagrams, unfamiliar terminology, pauses, or accessibility needs.
- Use it to compare drafts rather than as a guaranteed speaking time or contractual duration.

How to read the result
Positive estimates are rounded up to whole minutes, with a minimum display of one minute. Displayed characters and timing units differ. The English version uses word count plus the supported Japanese-character count divided by four; punctuation does not add timing units.
Scope and limits
This is an estimate from your chosen speed, not a measured reading rate. Displayed characters count non-whitespace code points; words follow the internal token pattern. Technical terms, figures, difficulty, rereading, and silent versus spoken reading are not modeled. A speed of zero or less is invalid.

Japanese mode adds four units per English word to the supported Japanese character count. English mode adds one quarter of a unit per Japanese character to the English word count.
Japanese characters are recognized by a defined range. This is not a measurement covering every Unicode ideograph or reading speed in every language.
