How to read the result
An end time at or before the start is treated as the next day. The first example subtracts a 0.5-hour break from eight clock hours. Decimal 7.5 means seven hours and thirty minutes. Equal times mean 24 hours, so do not use equal times to record a day without work.
Scope and limits
This handles one clock-time span, without dates, time-zone offsets, daylight-saving changes or multi-day shifts. Breaks must be non-negative and no longer than the span. Pay, overtime categories and break entitlements are not assessed.
Verification: existing calculation functions are checked against eight hours minus thirty minutes, the 24-hour equal-time rule and rejection of excessive breaks. Both language interfaces and input history are checked.

Read decimal hours correctly
09:00 to 17:30 with a 60-minute break gives 7 hours 30 minutes, or 7.5 decimal hours.
Decimal hours are net minutes divided by 60. Thirty minutes is 0.5 hours, so 7 hours 30 minutes is not 7.30.
Equal start and end times mean a 24-hour shift ending the following day, rather than zero hours.
Frequently asked questions
Does it support overnight shifts?
Yes. A shift such as 22:00 to 06:00 is treated as crossing midnight.
What if the break is longer than the shift?
The tool shows an error because the net working time would be invalid.
Does it calculate overtime pay?
No. It calculates elapsed working time only.
