PDF Page Numbers

Add page numbers to a PDF and save it. Choose a starting number, position, font size and margin, with an optional page range.

How to use

  1. Choose one PDF and set the starting number, position, font size and margin.
  2. Check which pages to number and add the numbers.
  3. Save the PDF and check numbering and overlap with existing content.

PDF and numbering settings

Drop one PDF here.

PDF input: at most 40 MB and 100 pages; output: 96 MB. Encrypted PDFs are unsupported, including PDFs that open without a password.

Integer 0–1,000,000, assigned to the original first page.

Integer 8–36.

Integer 4–72. One point is 1/72 inch.

Empty means all pages. Example: 1-3, 5. Numbers follow the original page order.

Result

Try a use case and check the result

Check how the starting number behaves when numbering all pages or only a subset.

Example buttons replace the inputs and settings above and calculate. Restore previous input steps back one example at a time. After trying multiple examples, repeat restore to return to your original input. This history is lost when the page closes.

Number two pages starting at 7

Input and settings

Two pages / start 7 / 10 pt font / 4 pt margin / bottom center / range 1-2.

Expected result

The saved PDF retains two pages and original text, adding 7 to page 1 and 8 to page 2.

Numbering only page 2 still produces 8

Input and settings

Keep start 7, choose only page 2, and place the number at the top right.

Expected result

Page 1 is unchanged; page 2 receives 8. The subset is not renumbered consecutively from 7.

How to read the result

The label is start + original page number − 1. Margin and font size use points (72 pt = 1 inch). Existing content is not automatically avoided; inspect the saved PDF for overlap.

Scope and limits

Input up to 40,000,000 bytes and 100 pages; output up to 96,000,000 bytes. Start 0–1,000,000, font 8–36 pt, margin 4–72 pt. Encrypted PDFs and unsupported page boxes/rotation are rejected. Labels must fit the page. Save as numbered.pdf without overwriting the input.

Open the actual saved PDF in an independent reader and verify original text, page count, labels 7/8, and label 8 only on page 2 for the subset.

Details and limits

Choose one PDF, set the starting number, position, font size and margin, then add numbers. Save PDF downloads the numbered document. The original file is unchanged.

The starting number belongs to the original first page. Starting at 10 and selecting only page 3 draws 12 on page 3. An empty range numbers every page; ranges such as 1-3, 5 select pages. No pages are reordered or removed.

Numbers use black ASCII digits in Helvetica. Placement follows each selected page’s displayed orientation and crop box, supporting 0°, 90°, 180° and 270° rotation. Unsupported geometry or numbers that do not fit prevent saving. The margin separates the visible page edge and the number’s text bounds.

Overlaps with existing content are not detected automatically. Choose a position clear of existing text and images. There is no in-page PDF preview; inspect the downloaded PDF.

Processing stays in your browser. PDF data, output and filenames are neither stored nor sent. Size and page limits are enforced, but complex PDFs may fail within those limits.

Encrypted or damaged PDFs are rejected. Digital signatures, PDF/A conformance and complete preservation of special forms or annotations are not guaranteed. Keep original signed or important documents.

Changing input or settings clears previous output. Cancel retains the PDF; reset clears the PDF and results while retaining settings. A native operation may need to finish before another run. Delayed results are discarded and cannot be saved.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Set a page range. Numbers derive from the starting number and original page position.

Does it support rotated pages?

Pages rotated 0°, 90°, 180° or 270° are supported, with placement relative to each visible page.

What if numbers overlap existing text?

Adjust the position, font size or margin. Overlaps with existing content are not detected.
