How to use
- Type or paste the text you want to count.
- Review the character, word, line, and UTF-8 byte totals.
- Copy the text or save it as a TXT file when needed.
How the totals work
“Without spaces” excludes spaces, tabs, line breaks, and other whitespace. An empty input has 0 lines; once text is entered, line breaks separate the lines. UTF-8 bytes measure encoded data size, so that total can be larger than the character count.
Good for
Check the length of drafts and social posts, prepare text for fields with limits, or keep track of a writing goal.
About this tool
Your text is processed only in your browser and is never sent to a server.
Count Japanese text without changing it
The original character, word, line and UTF-8 byte totals still work for any text. The script breakdown counts each Unicode code point once. Kanji includes Han letters also used in other languages; hiragana and katakana letters are separate, including half-width katakana.
Marks, punctuation, emoji and shared kana signs such as the long vowel mark are Other. A composed voiced kana is one letter; a separate combining accent or half-width voicing mark counts separately as Other. A joined emoji can therefore contain several code points. The counter does not normalize or rewrite your text.
These are character counts, not a reading, translation or guaranteed word count for Japanese. Use the list-cleaning guide when full-width and half-width entries need to match.
