Ruby HTML Builder
Enter base text and a reading to generate escaped HTML ruby markup.
How to use
- Enter the base text and reading separately. Generate each word individually when readings differ.
- Review the output and paste it into a content field that accepts HTML.
- Check the destination page. A field that does not allow HTML may show the code literally or strip the tags.
When to use this tool
Generate HTML that displays a reading annotation above a name or difficult term. The tool does not infer pronunciation; it combines one base text with one explicitly supplied reading.

Example input and actual output
- Base text: Rakuruno
- Reading: ra-ku-ru-no
<ruby>Rakuruno<rp>(</rp><rt>ra-ku-ru-no</rt><rp>)</rp></ruby>
ruby groups the base and reading, rt contains the annotation, and rp supplies fallback parentheses. The tool does not translate or verify pronunciation. It can annotate pronunciation in other languages when you supply the reading.
Scope and limitations
Does not infer pronunciation. Attaches one reading to the entire base text and escapes HTML characters.
Next step and alternatives
HTML Entity Encoder & Decoder — Inspect escaped character references in the generated markup.
Frequently asked questions
Does it add furigana automatically?
No. You enter both the base and reading, which avoids claiming to infer the correct pronunciation of names.
Can the base text contain HTML characters?
Yes. Characters such as < and & are escaped so the supplied text is not executed as markup.
What are the rp tags in the output for?
They provide fallback parentheses for environments without ruby rendering. ruby groups the base and reading, while rt contains the annotation.
